On September 4, 2019, American Airlines’ last flight of the MD-80 departed from Dallas-Fort Worth for O’Hare International Airport. The remaining 26 aircraft took their final flights to Roswell, New Mexico.

American Airlines first began using the MD-80 aircraft in the 1980s, and by 2003 was operating 362 of the planes. When introduced, the MD-80 was one of the most fuel efficient commercial airplanes in the sky.

The MD-80 is the loudest aircraft operated out of O’Hare. The ONCC looks forward to a fleet update from American Airlines, scheduled for the Commission's October meeting. There are other carriers still operating the MD-80 at O'Hare and the Technical Committee is planning additional outreach encouraging them to also consider phasing out the aircraft.
